Prerequisites for Initial Type Rating Training

Before beginning your Plane Life Initial Type Rating course, pilots must meet a few essential requirements to ensure a safe, efficient, and productive training experience. Our goal is to tailor each program to your background while maintaining the highest professional standards — consistent with leading training organizations like Flight Safety and CAE.

Minimum Licenses & Ratings

FAA Private Pilot Certificate with Instrument Rating (Multi-Engine preferred; Commercial or ATP recommended)
Or a foreign license equivalent that meets FAA conversion requirements

Experience Recommendations

Minimum of  1,000 hours total flight time (or equivalent turbine or complex aircraft experience)
Recent multi-engine and instrument flight experience preferred
Familiarity with IFR procedures, turbine performance, and modern avionics systems such as Garmin G1000/G3000

Medical & Regulatory Requirements

Valid FAA Medical Certificate (Second Class or higher)
English language proficiency endorsement (ICAO Level 4 or above)
Must meet applicable FAA Part 61 prerequisites for type rating and instrument privileges

Preparation & Knowledge

Completion of the Plane Life Pre-Study Program, including aircraft systems, limitations, and procedures
Strong understanding of Crew Resource Management (CRM), high-altitude operations, and performance planning

If you do not currently meet one or more of these prerequisites, our training advisors can guide you through the steps to qualify — including foundational flight instruction, instrument proficiency, or aircraft transition training. Plane Life is committed to supporting every pilot’s journey from first flight to full jet command.

Recurrent Training

Stay current, confident, and ahead of the standards with Plane Life’s in-aircraft Recurrent Training. Budgeting Tips & Considerations

  • Instructor Travel & Per Diem: Depending on where your aircraft is, expect instructor travel days, lodging, and meals — these can add $1,000–$2,500 or more.

  • Aircraft Availability: If your aircraft is unavailable, leasing another jet may be necessary (if that service is offered), adding a rental fee.

  • Examiner (DPE) Fees: For check rides, using a Designated Pilot Examiner often has separate fees. Budget these in.

  • Regulatory & Insurance Requirements: Sometimes insurance or operator requirements demand extra hours or advice, which increases cost.

  • Location: Remote or hard-to-reach locations tend to drive up travel, lodging, and logistics costs.
